The City Colleges of Chicago remain the only community college district in Illinois without an elected board of trustees. Our students and faculty deserve a board that is accountable to the people, not political appointees. Senate Bill 1693 would change this by establishing an elected board for City Colleges—ensuring decisions are made with students' best interests at heart.
SB 1693 has 41 co-sponsors in the Illinois Senate—a supermajority with nearly 70% of the chamber in support. Yet, despite this overwhelming backing, SB 1693 has not even been given a committee hearing. Other bills are moving forward, but this critical legislation remains stalled.
We need to make our voices heard. Email your State Senator today and ask:
Why hasn’t SB 1693 been given a committee hearing?
With a supermajority of co-sponsors, why isn’t this bill moving forward?
This is about democracy and fairness in higher education governance. Our students, faculty, and staff deserve an accountable, elected board.
Click here to send a pre-drafted email to your Senator. Let them know we are watching and demand action on SB 1693. You can edit the email before sending to explain why an elected board matters to you.
In solidarity,
